Standardized Software Labeling The Way Forward For SAM Utilities, Processes

January 31, 2007 Boston, MA, USA

ManageSoft Corporation encourages those with an interest in Software Asset Management (SAM) to review and comment on draft standard ISO/IEC 19770-2, which covers software tagging, labeling and identification.

The standard lays the foundation for improved SAM processes, by:

  • Encouraging software vendors to provide consistent sets of data about applications, reducing asset managers' need to consolidate data from disparate sources to meet management and reporting requirements
  • Simplifying the development of utilities that support SAM, enabling the early release of good quality products to support enterprises' SAM initiatives
  • Streamlining in-house integration of tools and processes that support different aspects of SAM, by enabling them to use common data structures.

The International Business Software Managers Association (IBSMA) was appointed by ISO/IEC Working Group 21 to draft the standard. ManageSoft is an active IBSMA member, and was heavily involved on the committee responsible for drafting the standard, along with other industry leaders such as IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, and Symantec.

"As an international standard, supported by multiple vendors and industry organizations, we are confident that the standard opens the way for the development of strong SAM products and processes, which will benefit enterprises worldwide," said Steven Russman, Executive Director of IBSMA. "The input from ManageSoft and other members, allowed us to progress quickly to a practical and complete proposal."

The draft standard was released on January 24, and is available at http://www.ecpmedia.com/ibsma_samstds.html. Public comments are invited until March 16, after which the standard will be finalized in time for presentation at the May 20-24 International Organization for Standardization (ISO) plenary meeting in Moscow, Russia.

ManageSoft recently participated in the IBSMA SAM Summit roadshow across North America to build awareness on SAM Best Practices, and is pleased to sponsor the upcoming SAM Summit in Chicago, May 14-15, 2007. For more information: http://www.ecpmedia.com/samsummit07.html.
